Mehrangarh the Fort of Jodhpur crowns a rocky hill that rises 400 feet above the surrounding plain, and appears both to command and to meld with the landscape. One of the largest forts in Rajasthan, India. it contains some of the finest palaces and preserves in its museum so many priceless relics of Indian courtly life.
The Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the ruler of Mandore and the founder of the city of
Jodhpur. While building the city, he realized that the location would be safe, isolated, and therefore could be suitable to be his capital. Then he built a huge fort spread over an area of 5 km with a height of 125 meters to keep his loved ones and the people of his kingdom safe from the invaders. Legend has it that Rao Jodha had to forcefully relocate a hermit named Cheeria Nathji from the hill to build the fort, which ended him up with a curse. The hermit cursed that the fort will always suffer from the scarcity of water. In an effort to get rid of the curse and please the sadhu, Rao Jodha thought of building a temple and a house for him within the fort. There are many other stories surrounding the procedure followed by the king to nullify the effect of the curse.
2. Jaswant Thada
The beautiful monument in marble, often referred to as the "Taj Mahal of Marwar", was completed in 1906 AD in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singhji (1873–1895) of
Jodhpur by his son, Maharaja Sardar Singhji (1895–1911). The monument was built with intricately carved sheets of marble. These sheets are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a hot glow when illuminated by the Sun.
The main hall was built like a temple, where pujas (rituals) were also performed. Ancestor worship was common among Rajput clans.
Today, Jaswant Thada is managed and maintained by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust (MMT) and is always open to the public. The Trust is running a museum at Jaswant Thada which displays pictures of Marwar rulers along with informative sermons -
